Akihito Narihisago, a former brilliant detective now imprisoned for murder, dives into the subconscious "id wells" of serial killers using the Mizuhanome system operated by the investigative unit Kura. Inside each well he becomes Sakaido, a detective with no memory of his real life, who must find the corpse of a girl named Kaeru to unlock the killer's psyche. As Kura's field team hunts a serial killer called the Challenger in the real world, Sakaido's discoveries inside the wells begin revealing connections that blur the line between investigator and criminal.
