A nameless ronin known only as Nanashi agrees to guard Kotaro, a boy on the run across Sengoku-era Japan with his dog Tobimaru. A contingent of Ming Dynasty warriors, led by the skilled Western swordsman Luo-Lang, is hunting the child — his blood is the key ingredient in an immortality ritual ordered by the Ming Emperor. Nanashi has bound his katana to its sheath, vowing never to draw it, but keeping Kotaro alive may force him to break that oath.
