Mewtwo, a Pokémon cloned from the DNA of the mythical Mew, awakens in a laboratory and destroys it after learning he was created as an experiment. From a base on New Island, he lures Ash Ketchum, Misty, Brock, and other trainers with an invitation from the world's strongest Pokémon Master, then reveals his plan to clone their Pokémon and prove his creations superior to the originals. The clones and the originals square off, and the real Mew arrives to answer Mewtwo's challenge in person.
