In the autumn of 1995, high schooler Mikiya Kokutō notices a kimono-clad classmate named Shiki Ryōgi standing alone in the rain and gradually befriends her, even as a serial killer begins leaving mutilated bodies around Mifune City. Shiki carries a second personality — a male alter named SHIKI — and her own moods grow stranger as the murders multiply. This chronologically first chapter of the Kara no Kyōkai film series is the prequel-set opening of the seven-part theatrical run.
