Ashito Aoi, a third-year middle-schooler from Ehime on the island of Shikoku, plays striker for a weak local team and dreams of going pro, even as his temper gets him sent off in his final junior-high tournament. Tatsuya Fukuda, head coach of the Tokyo City Esperion youth side, spots something in Ashito's raw instinct and invites him to tryouts in the capital. Backed by his older brother Shun, Ashito moves to Tokyo alone, where Esperion's coaching staff begin reshaping him from a self-centred forward into a player who reads the whole pitch.
