Synopsis
In an alternate postwar Japan split in two, with the northern island of Ezo occupied by a foreign Union that has raised a vast tower across the strait, three Aomori teenagers fixate on reaching it. Hiroki Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa rebuild a small plane to fly to the tower, promising their classmate Sayuri Sawatari they will take her there one day. When Sayuri vanishes, the unfinished promise and the tower's strange effect on the world draw the two boys back together. This is Makoto Shinkai's first feature film.
