A cult takes Juri Yukawa's unemployed brother and her young nephew, giving the family thirty minutes to produce a ransom it cannot pay. Instead of waiting, Juri's grandfather brings out a stone the Yukawas have kept for generations and opens Stasis, a halted world where nothing moves but them. Juri crosses over with her father and her grandfather to reach the hostages. At the kidnappers' hideout they find people who move through Stasis as freely as they do.
