Rudo Surebrec, a teenager living on the rim of the floating Sphere, is framed for murder and cast into the Pit, the wasteland below where humanity's trash and monsters collect. There he discovers he is a Giver, able to breathe life into discarded objects and forge them into weapons called Vital Instruments. Rescued by Enjin, a veteran Giver wielding the Umbreaker, Rudo joins the Cleaners and fights the Trash Beasts that infest the depths.
