Mamori Tokonome wakes up quarantined on Mermaid, one of five artificial islands where girls infected with the Armed Virus are confined. When attackers close in, a transfer student named Mirei Shikishima kisses her, and Mamori transforms into a sword that Mirei wields against their pursuers. The island sorts its residents into Extars, who become weapons, and Liberators, who wield them, and the bond between the two girls makes Mamori's power unusually strong.
