Sentan Island sits in an uneasy quiet between the military and the strange beings tied to the Hiruko. On an ordinary school morning, Akiyuki Takehara is caught in an attack and a gem lodges in his arm, forcing a transformation into a Xam'd. A masked drifter named Nakiami takes him aboard her airship to teach him control, since a Xam'd who loses himself turns to stone, and Akiyuki leaves behind his home and his friend Haru.
