Kazuhiko Nukumizu, a first-year at Tsuwabuki High School who expects to pass unnoticed, stumbles onto Anna Yanami's rejection: her childhood friend Sosuke Hakamada has just started dating someone else. He ends up as her reluctant listener. That same week he meets Lemon Yakishio, a track sprinter whose crush has been claimed by a cram-school rival, and Chika Komari, a literature club member watching the boy she likes grow closer to another girl. Nukumizu has no stake in any of their situations — but keeps getting drawn in anyway.
