Having passed their debut trial, the cheerful living doll Emilico and her shadow mistress Kate begin life as recognized members of the great mansion alongside the other newly paired children. Kate sets her sights on the rank of Star Bearer, the standing that would bring the house's secrets within reach, and the two start quietly gathering information. Their first thread arrives with word of a robed figure seen in the great hall, while the soot the shadow nobles give off raises questions nobody is allowed to ask.
