Junior-high student Miaka Yuki and her best friend Yui Hongo open a book called the Universe of the Four Gods at the library and are pulled inside it, into a world modeled on ancient China. Separated from Yui, Miaka is named the Priestess of Suzaku and must gather the seven Celestial Warriors of the god Suzaku to be granted her wishes. She soon falls for one of them, the money-obsessed fighter Tamahome, while Yui ends up bound to the rival nation of Kutou.
