Izumiko Suzuhara, a shy fifteen-year-old raised at Tamakura Shrine in the Kumano World Heritage area, short-circuits any electronic device she touches. On a class trip to Tokyo with Miyuki Sagara, the son of her guardian and a trainee yamabushi assigned to protect her, she encounters the Himegami, an ancient spirit for whom Izumiko is destined to serve as a vessel. Pushed to leave the countryside for good, she enrolls at Houjou High School in Tokyo, and her ordinary student life gives way to her role at the center of Japan's hidden spiritual world.
