Izumiko Suzuhara, a shy fifteen-year-old raised at Tamakura Shrine in the Kumano World Heritage area, short-circuits any electronic device she touches. Pushed to leave the countryside, she enrolls at Hōjō High School in Tokyo alongside Miyuki Sagara, the son of her guardian and a trainee yamabushi assigned to protect her. On a school trip she encounters the Himegami, an ancient spirit for whom Izumiko is destined to serve as a vessel, and her ordinary student life gives way to her role at the center of Japan's hidden spiritual world.
