Raised as a man by her general father to inherit his post, Oscar François de Jarjayes commands the Royal Guard at the Palace of Versailles in the years before the French Revolution. Her first charge is the young Austrian dauphine Marie Antoinette, newly arrived at court. As palace intrigue thickens and unrest spreads through Paris, Oscar is torn between her duty to the crown and her growing sympathy for the people, while the Swedish count Axel von Fersen complicates her heart.
