Montmorency, a nobleman's son obsessed with alchemy, studies at a knights' academy until France's defeat at Agincourt during the Hundred Years' War scatters the school and forces him into flight. Chasing the secret of the Philosopher's Stone, he performs a ritual meant to make himself a Ulysses, an immortal alchemist of limitless power. Instead the transformation falls on a dying village girl named Jeanne, who awakens with the Stone's power and takes up arms in his place.
