Nishi, an aimless aspiring mangaka, runs into his childhood crush Myon on the train just as her family's troubles pull him into a confrontation with two yakuza. Shot dead in the chaos, he refuses the afterlife, claws his way back to life, and goes on the run with Myon and her sister. Their escape ends inside the belly of an enormous whale, where the three meet a castaway who has lived there for decades. Masaaki Yuasa directs this feature in constantly shifting animation styles.
