In a far-future world kept stable and prosperous by the satellite-based Fractale System, a network that surrounds people with holographic 'doppels', a curious boy named Clain rescues a fleeing priestess named Phryne. She vanishes the next morning, leaving behind a brooch from which a cheerful doppel girl called Nessa emerges, one Clain can actually touch. Setting out with Nessa to find Phryne, Clain begins to learn how much the world depends on the Fractale System and what is happening as it falters.
