In this 2013 retelling, the shut-in Jun Sakurada lives an alternate path: handed Rozen's letter asking whether he will "wind" the contract, this Jun refuses, and the living dolls never enter his life. Years later he scrapes by at a bookstore until cryptic text messages, seemingly from another version of himself who said yes, begin reaching him. The story rewinds to set this "unwound" Jun against the world where the doll Shinku and her sisters bound themselves to him.
