Hotori Arashiyama is a chatty, scatterbrained high schooler who waitresses at the Seaside coffee shop in the Maruko shopping district, which its owner, Uki Isobata, has relaunched as a maid cafe without anyone there quite knowing how one works. A devoted mystery-fiction fan, Hotori treats everyday neighbourhood happenings as cases to crack alongside friends like Toshiko Tatsuno and the shop's regulars. The episodes stay close to daily life and occasionally drift into ghosts, aliens and other small-town strangeness.
