A small grey-and-white kitten wanders off during a walk and loses her mother and littermates. Found on the street by young Youhei Yamada and his mother Miwa, she is taken into the family's apartment, where she answers to the name Chi. Since the building bans pets, the Yamadas spend their days keeping Chi hidden from the landlady and neighbors while the kitten explores her new home in short, everyday episodes.
