Phosphophyllite is the youngest and most brittle of twenty-eight immortal gem-people who defend a far-future Earth, ground down to a single shore, against the Lunarians who descend from the Moon to harvest their bodies for ornament. Too soft to fight, Phos is assigned by their teacher Kongo to compile a natural-history encyclopedia instead. The task pushes Phos toward the reclusive Cinnabar and the first real steps out of uselessness.
