Land of the Lustrous

In a far future where the Earth has been ground down to a single shore, twenty-eight immortal gem-people defend themselves against the Lunarians, beings who descend from the Moon to harvest their bodies for ornament. Phosphophyllite, the youngest and most brittle, is too soft to fight, so their teacher Kongo assigns Phos to compile a natural-history encyclopedia. The task pushes Phos toward the reclusive Cinnabar and the first real steps out of uselessness.
