An immortal entity is cast onto Earth as a featureless orb that can take the shape of anything that dies near it. It first becomes a rock, then a dying wolf, then a lonely boy whose form it keeps after his death, gradually learning what it means to be alive. Named Fushi, it wanders from one human life to the next — among them a girl named March set to be sacrificed — collecting forms, names, and grief as it slowly becomes a person.
