Saichi Sugimoto, a Russo-Japanese War veteran nicknamed 'Immortal Sugimoto,' pans for gold in Hokkaido to support a fallen comrade's widow. A drunk's tale of a hidden Ainu gold cache turns real when Sugimoto learns its map was tattooed in pieces across the bodies of escaped Abashiri Prison convicts. Saved from a bear by Asirpa, a young Ainu girl hunting the men who murdered her father, he proposes they track down the tattooed prisoners together. Their search pits them against army soldiers and other treasure hunters across the frozen north.
