Nanami Momozono loses her apartment when her father skips town on his gambling debts, and she is left with nowhere to go until she helps a stranger named Mikage out of a tree. In thanks, Mikage hands her the keys to his home, which turns out to be a run-down shrine, and quietly passes his title as its Land God to her before vanishing. Now marked as a deity, Nanami must win over Tomoe, the sharp-tongued fox yokai who served the shrine and refuses to take orders from a human girl.
