Manji is a swordsman cursed with immortality by sacred bloodworms that knit shut any wound, and the only way he can die again is to slay a thousand evil men. In Tokugawa-era Japan he takes up with Rin Asano, a girl hunting Anotsu Kagehisa, the swordsman who slaughtered her family to build the Ittō-ryū, a school that wins by any technique and devours rival dojos. Rin hires Manji as her bodyguard, and his road to mortality runs through her revenge.
