Rudo lives among the "tribesfolk" in the slums of the Sphere, a floating city where the wealthy live above and the descendants of criminals are penned below. Framed for a murder, he is hurled through a hole into the Pit — an endless wasteland of garbage roamed by monsters made of trash. There he is saved by Enjin, a Cleaner who wields a Vital Instrument, a weapon forged from a cherished object, and who awakens Rudo's own power as a Giver.
