Charles-Henri Sanson is born heir to France's royal executioner line, expected to inherit the title of Monsieur de Paris and carry out the crown's death sentences in the decades before the French Revolution. Gentle and sensitive by nature, he recoils from the cruelty the role demands even as his family pushes him toward the scaffold. His younger sister Marie-Joseph, cold and defiant of the limits placed on women, hungers for the very power he dreads, and together they move through an 18th-century France sliding toward upheaval.
