In the summer of 1966, introverted classical pianist Kaoru Nishimi transfers to a high school in Sasebo, Nagasaki, where he meets Sentaro Kawabuchi, a delinquent his classmates fear. Sentaro's passion for jazz pulls the reserved Kaoru into the music, and the two start playing together in the basement of a record shop run by the family of their classmate Ritsuko Mukae. Across three years of school, their friendship and the bonds around it take shape through jam sessions.
