Shuichi Nitori, a quiet grade-schooler assigned a boy at birth who wishes to be a girl, transfers to a new school and is seated beside Yoshino Takatsuki, a classmate assigned a girl who wishes to be a boy. The two become fast friends and recognize something of themselves in each other. Across grade school and into adolescence, the two navigate gender identity, first crushes, and the start of puberty among friends and family who don't always understand.
