In late-Victorian London, Emma works as a maid-of-all-work for Kelly Stownar, a retired governess living quietly on her own. When William Jones, the son of a wealthy merchant family climbing toward the gentry, comes to call on his former teacher, he and Emma are drawn to each other across the rigid lines of class.
