Shinichi Chiaki is the top music student at Momogaoka College, a perfectionist pianist and violinist who secretly dreams of conducting but is stuck in Japan by a phobia of planes and the sea. His neighbor Megumi Noda, who calls herself Nodame, is a gifted but chaotic piano student who plays everything by ear and keeps her apartment a disaster. After they meet by chance, Nodame falls for Chiaki almost at once, while he slowly comes to recognize the strange brilliance in how she plays.
