In Amberground, a land of permanent night lit only by an artificial sun, Lag Seeing becomes a Letter Bee, a government courier who carries mail across a country split into rigid castes. Lag can read the memories bound up in people and objects, and he travels with Niche, a wild girl who serves as his Dingo, or bodyguard. His real reason for taking the job is to find Gauche Suede, the Letter Bee who once delivered Lag himself as a child and has since vanished, while armored insects called Gaichuu prey on travelers between the districts.
