In the poor village of Amun, a book-loving boy named Theo is kept out of the local library because of his pointed ears and his family's poverty. He dreams instead of Aftzaak, the City of Books, where the great central library stands and prejudice like that has no hold. When Sedona, a Kafna in the service of that library, passes through Amun and sees how badly he wants to read, the meeting opens a path toward an apprenticeship he never thought possible.
