Hiroto Ikuta is 29, works part-time at a fishing pond, has no girlfriend and no plan for the future, and is perfectly content that way, awkward only around women he finds pretty. His friendship with Hanae Wada, a cranky 83-year-old neighbor he shares meals with, ends with her leaving him her old single-storey house. Into it moves his 18-year-old cousin Natsumi Kobayashi, up from Yamagata to cram for art school entrance exams, and the two settle into life under one roof.
