Richard, third son of the Duke of York, is born intersex and grows up convinced he is damned, tormented by visions no one else can see. England splits between the houses of York and Lancaster in the Wars of the Roses, and Richard throws himself into his father's claim on the throne. A charged and dangerous pull then forms between him and Henry VI, the rival king he was raised to hate. The story reworks Shakespeare's Henry VI and Richard III.
