Sumi Kitamura, a fifteen-year-old in Meiji-era Tokyo, scrapes together food for her adopted siblings while her gambling brother Eisuke piles on debt. A wealthy stranger named Soichiro Ashida offers to clear it all on one condition: she marry him so he can claim his inheritance, and never fall in love with him. Sumi accepts to save her family, then has to play the part of a refined wife in a household where Soichiro's friend Nozomu Ijuin takes an unexpected interest in her.
