Biking home from college, an aspiring mystery novelist watches an elementary-school girl get hit by a truck and die in the street. What stays with him is her friend standing nearby, who carefully saves the game she was playing before walking over to the body. That girl, whom he comes to call U, then takes him captive and shuts him in, and the strange, almost domestic arrangement that follows leaves him knowing things about her he would rather not. He tells the whole of it ten years on, a published author by then.
