When her parents divorce, twelve-year-old Ann Uekusa moves with her mother from Tokyo to the rural town of Shimane, where her grandparents live and everyone already knows everyone. Lonely at first, Ann is taken in by a circle of local children: the steady Daigo Kitamura and the siblings Fuji and Shika Tsukishima. As family hardship presses on her, Ann's bond with Daigo deepens into a first love, and the story follows their relationship across the years and the choices that pull them apart and back together.
