A plague called Troy has no cure; only the women known as Sisters can draw its toxin out of the infected, and every treatment shortens a Sister's own life. Sister Elraine, infected herself, collapses in a seizure that stops the instant she touches Kiri, a seemingly ordinary boy the disease cannot take hold of. Unable to let go of his hand without falling ill again, Elraine travels hand in hand with Kiri toward her order's headquarters, where his immunity may finally yield a cure.
