In a world modeled on ancient Rome, a young swordsman named Ares enlists with the Temple Mercenaries, the most respected soldiers-for-hire in the country of Chronos, still hunting the red-eyed swordsman who killed his master. He is posted to the same unit as Mikael, another swordsman he meets at the entrance trial, alongside Baroona, who fights with a pair of linked daggers, and the cowardly artist Gohue. Their first job together is clearing bandits out of a village, and the bond the four build on contract work carries as much of the story as the wars around them.
