Ken Kaneki is a quiet college student in a Tokyo where ghouls, predators who look human but feed on human flesh, hide among the population. A date with the alluring Rize Kamishiro turns into an ambush, and after a near-fatal accident Kaneki wakes from surgery transformed into a half-ghoul who now hungers for the food he once ate. Caught between two worlds, he is taken in at the café Anteiku and must learn to live with his new nature while ghoul investigators hunt his kind.
