In a Japan where cremation is the norm and embalming is treated as unclean work, Shinjurou Mamiya practices the trade and bears the stigma that comes with it. Each chapter follows a separate case at his table and the toll the work takes on him, from the families he serves to his own restless need for closeness. He keeps women at arm's length even as he refuses a real relationship with Azuki, the one woman he loves.
