In a Japan where cremation is the norm and embalming is treated as unclean work, Shinjurou Mamiya practices the trade and carries the stigma that comes with it. Each chapter follows a separate case at his table and what the job leaves behind in him, from the families he serves to his own restless need for closeness. He keeps women at a distance and refuses a real relationship with Azuki, his landlord's daughter, the one woman he loves.
