On the island of Pirito, the mechanical goddess Marie drifts through the sky above a peaceful world whose people never turn to hatred or violence. Down in the factory town of Gil, Kai grows into a young man and begins to hear Marie's music, a melody no one else can perceive. His childhood friend Pipi, who dreams of building a flying machine like her father's, has long cared for him, while that music keeps pulling Kai toward what Marie really is.
