Ken Kaneki, an eighteen-year-old college freshman in Tokyo, barely survives a date with Rize Kamishiro after she reveals herself as a ghoul — a creature that feeds on human flesh. Emergency surgery saves his life by transplanting Rize's organs into him, but the procedure leaves Kaneki half-ghoul, unable to eat normal food and craving human meat. Taken in by the staff of Anteiku, a coffee shop run by ghouls who coexist peacefully with humans, he struggles to hold on to his humanity while learning the rules of a hidden predatory world.
