Derek grew up in the slums of Ebelstein and learned early that magic does not erase a class line. He clawed his way up to second-tier mage and still scrapes by on mercenary work. The job that changes things is tutoring Diella Duplain, the youngest daughter of a noble house who cannot cast a thing and will be shipped off to a convent if she fails. She is rude to him from the first day, so he is rude straight back.
