Takao Ameku, a doctor still in her twenties who serves as both deputy director of Ten'ikai General Hospital and head of its general diagnostics department, takes the patients every other specialist has given up on. They arrive sounding like folklore: a boy who says he met a kappa, a nurse frightened by a will-o'-the-wisp, a schoolgirl insisting she is suddenly pregnant. Ameku reads each case as a symptom, and now and then what she uncovers underneath is not an illness but a crime. These novels are the source for the manga adaptation.
