Nishimura has earned the nickname "Grim Reaper" from her fifth-grade classmates, who've spent years avoiding the gloomy girl at the back of the room. Everything changes when transfer student Takada shows up, decides her reputation is actually cool, and starts talking to her like the bullying never happened. Baffled by his cluelessness but unable to shake him off, Nishimura ends up spending the summer with Takada anyway: the pool, the sunflowers, the fireworks, and something like a real friendship taking shape. It's the kind of ordinary childhood summer neither of them expected to have.
