Two years before the events of the main story, Ikoma is a steamsmith at Aragane Station, stubbornly working on a weapon that can kill the Kabane for good while everyone around him writes him off. One winter he happens to be on the spot when a woman suspected of infection disappears, and the three days that follow are ones he never forgets. Kurusu, Ayame Yomogawa, Takumi, and Kibito are pulled in alongside him, facing an earlier, far less understood form of the threat that will one day drive the station's survivors onto the armored train Koutetsujou.
