As an industrial revolution spreads across Hinomoto, a plague of undead Kabane emerges that only dies when its iron-armored heart is pierced. At Aragane Station, Ikoma builds a weapon called the Tsuranukizutsu to fight them, and when the steam-powered Hayajiro comes under attack by an infected crew, he finally gets to use it and meets a girl named Mumei in the chaos. This novelization retells the story of the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress anime, the franchise's original work.
